EFE | 5/09/2008 The European Parliament against asked the Cuban regime this Thursday to authorize dissident Oswaldo Payá and the Ladies in White to leave the country to explain in the European Union the situation on the island, EFE reports. In a report on the human rights situation in the world, the European parliamentarians introduced an amendment in which they reject “vigorously the systematic violence and the repeated acts of harassment” suffered by the Ladies in White, comprised of the women relatives of dissidents imprisoned in the Spring of 2003. The document calls on Havana to authorize the group, which received the Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament in 2005, to receive the award at one of the institution’s headquarters in Brussels or Strasbourg . Likewise, it reiterates its request for Oswaldo Payá, who received the same prize in 2002, to be able to receive the prize in one of the institution’s headquarters in Brussels or Strasbourg . The amendment, presented by the conservative European parliamentarian from Lithuania , Laima Andrikiene, was approved by hand vote, with the entire report receiving 533 votes in favor, 63 against and 51 abstentions. The report’s presenter, the Italian Marco Capatto of the Radical Party, called on the EU to support the domestic Cuban dissidents to help them to “share their proposals” in the international media or through tourists who visit the country.
